In a significant legal development, the Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso rendered a verdict on Wednesday that has invalidated the selection of Oba Ghandi Olaoye as the new Soun of Ogbomoso. The legal proceedings were initiated by Prince Kabir Olaoye, one of the contenders for the revered throne, who contested the legitimacy of Ghandi’s ascent and the procedural aspects surrounding his appointment.

The background of this matter harkens back to September 8, 2023, when Oba Ghandi Olaoye assumed the mantle of leadership as the new Soun of Ogbomosho. This transition came several months after the demise of the late Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, who passed away on December 12, 2021, after a remarkable 48-year rule at the age of 95.

Prince Kabir Olaoye’s decision to approach the court with his grievances culminated in a legal battle bearing the suit number HOG/27/2022. The plaintiff, Prince Kabir Olaoye, alleged serious irregularities in the selection process that culminated in Ghandi’s appointment as Soun of Ogbomosho.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Kareem Adedokun, who presided over the case, made a consequential ruling. His pronouncement declared that the selection process leading to Ghandi’s appointment was marred by significant illegalities. Justice Adedokun further ruled that Ghandi’s nomination by the Laoye Ruling House was not valid, and consequently, the approval by the state government and installation by the kingmakers were deemed null and void.

Encouraging calm among the community, the source explained, “The case will definitely be appealed, and so, people should not fret. In the case instituted by Prince Olaoye, the judge said the process was proper and valid, but now the same process is faulted. It is conflicting, the Appeal Court will resolve that.
