In a recent development within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Pedro Obaseki, a prominent figure in the party, has leveled serious accusations against the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. Obaseki alleges that Wike is orchestrating a plan to undermine the party’s structure, thereby facilitating his own bid for the presidency in 2027.

Pedro Obaseki, who previously served as the Director of Planning and Strategy for the PDP’s 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, did not mince words when describing Wike as someone who, despite rising to power on the strength of the party’s support and the goodwill of its key figures, subsequently betrayed them upon reaching the pinnacle of his political career.

Obaseki’s statements were delivered during an interactive session with a select group of journalists in Abuja, held in response to Nyesom Wike’s call to suspend former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar from the PDP.

In a televised appearance on the Channels Television program, “Politics Today,” Wike emphasized the need for equity, justice, and fairness within the PDP. He urged the National Working Committee to suspend Atiku Abubakar and other prominent figures like Aminu Tambuwal in order to rebuild the party.

In reaction to Wike’s statements, Pedro Obaseki countered, alleging that Wike’s primary goal is to secure the presidency for himself. He accused Wike of actively working to weaken the PDP and, subsequently, the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the intention of creating a political vehicle for his 2027 presidential bid.

Obaseki also questioned Wike’s humility, referencing Chinua Achebe’s admonition that those whose successes were aided by others should remain humble. He asserted that Nyesom Wike, who ascended from being a Local Government chairman to Minister of State, Governor of Rivers State, and FCT Minister, has consistently disregarded the support he received along the way.

Obaseki further highlighted Wike’s history of pursuing personal agendas within the party. He pointed to Wike’s involvement in the removal of Uche Secondus as PDP chairman, which Obaseki believed was driven by Wike’s desire to eliminate potential obstacles to his own presidential ambitions.

Additionally, Obaseki criticized Wike for claiming to be the sole financier of the PDP, a party established in 1998 with a rich history that extends beyond Wike’s political career. He argued that Wike’s divisive actions and campaigns against party members had driven several notable figures, such as Bello Matawalle, David Umahi, and Prof Ben Ayade, to leave the party.

In closing, Obaseki suggested that if anyone should face suspension from the PDP, it should be Wike himself, given his alleged anti-party activities and divisive influence within the party, epitomizing the proverbial troublemaker in every tale.
