Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the esteemed representative of Anambra South Senatorial District, has pledged to put an immediate end to the Monday sit-at-home practice in his constituency. Recognizing the severe negative impact of this exercise on the commercial, economic, and overall well-being of South-East residents, the senator has resolved to confront this issue with utmost determination.Addressing the state vigilante and community security watch operatives from Nnewi’s four quarters—Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewi-Ichi—at the Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium in Nnewi, Senator Ubah expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and properties. He unveiled a range of security gadgets and equipment that he had procured for security operations in the Nnewi constituency and surrounding areas, emphasizing the need for airtight security measures.”Our efforts to abolish the self-inflicted harm of the Monday sit-at-home will commence on Monday, July 3,” declared Senator Ubah. “To demonstrate that our people are safe and that businesses can resume on Mondays, we will conduct a road show throughout various markets and roads tomorrow. The vigilante operatives have been charged with enhancing security in Nnewi’s major markets and providing adequate protection for traders and their goods, shielding them from any potential harm caused by the so-called unknown gunmen.”Senator Ubah drew attention to the detrimental impact of the sit-at-home order on business, commerce, and the economy of the region, particularly affecting the employment prospects of the youth. He lamented the decline of Nnewi, once known as an industrial hub in Africa, due to the sit-at-home practice, which he strongly believes cannot be allowed to persist.”I have procured several security gadgets and equipment, including CCTV cameras, patrol vans, motorcycles, walkie-talkies, and traditional ‘osisi agaga’ wooden staffs from Nnewi’s evil forests,” Senator Ubah added. “I am handing over these resources to the vigilante operatives to aid them in addressing any potential security breaches that may arise as we work to eradicate this harmful phenomenon called ‘sit-at-home’.”Initially introduced in 2021 by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to protest the rendition and detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, the Monday sit-at-home practice has persisted due to concerns of possible attacks by hoodlums. Senator Ubah expressed confidence in Kanu’s eventual release, assuring that the 10th National Assembly would explore new legislative avenues to facilitate his freedom. He further revealed his personal efforts in that regard.Blaming one Simon Ekpa in Finland for promoting and perpetuating the sit-at-home order, Senator Ubah criticized Ekpa’s actions from a distance and called for him to experience the hardships faced by the people directly. He cautioned Ekpa to desist from interfering with Anambra State and warned of severe consequences if he persisted.”For the past two years, Ekpa has enforced this sit-at-home order in the South-East, causing immense suffering and hardship,” Senator Ubah stated. “Enough is enough, and in agreement with our constituents, we have resolved that there will be no more observance of sit-at-home orders in Nnewi starting Monday, July 3, 2023. We have our own security measures and systems in place. While saboteurs may attempt to disrupt our efforts, we are determined to confront any aggressors who enter our town.”Senator Ubah highlighted the installation of 6,000 to 10,000 streetlights at strategic locations in Anambra South, as well as the provision of approximately 300 invisible security cameras, solar-powered CCTV systems with tracking devices, and wireless security cameras for comprehensive surveillance in Nnewi to combat insecurity.Dr. Maduako Atuenyi, the President-General of Nnewi Town Union, supported Senator Ubah’s stance, warning that businesses failing to open on Monday would face a six-month closure of their premises. “By Monday, July 3, we will embark on a show of force,” he affirmed. “Our economy is suffering, and anyone who refuses to open their shop will have it sealed by the community for six months.”
