In a commendable display of vigilance and concern for the welfare of minors, five children were rescued from the clutches of two suspected child traffickers in Auchi, Edo State on Friday. The children, all girls between the ages of seven and nine, had embarked on an unaccompanied journey from Kaduna to Onitsha, Anambra State, before being intercepted in Auchi.According to reliable sources, the incident unfolded in the evening when the young girls arrived at Auchi, intending to establish contact with the two suspected female traffickers who had purportedly offered to transport them to Onitsha. However, their timid demeanor and vulnerable appearance caught the attention of observant co-passengers, who grew suspicious of the situation. Prompt action was taken as the driver and his colleagues at Onitsha Park in Auchi promptly summoned the women to collect the children, leading to their apprehension. The two alleged traffickers, later identified as Vera Okhakhu and Blessing Agbokha, claimed to hail from Fugar in the Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.In a bid to ensure a thorough investigation, the two women were subjected to questioning and subsequently handed over to the local police at the Auchi Police Divisional Headquarters. Authorities intend to delve deeper into the matter and shed light on the activities of the alleged child traffickers.Despite attempts to seek a statement from Edo State Police spokesperson, Chidi Nwanbuzor, his unresponsiveness has impeded efforts to obtain an official comment on the incident. Nonetheless, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and actively safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable individuals, particularly children, against the threat of trafficking.
