In a significant breakthrough, the Rivers State Police Command announced the demise of Azunda Elechi, a well-known cultist, during a fierce gun battle with law enforcement officials. The incident occurred during a recent clash with the Dey-Gbam cult group in Mgbola Village, situated in the Ndele Emohua Local Government Area.Providing details of the operation, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, issued a statement on Thursday, emphasizing the successful outcome of the encounter. According to Iringe-Koko, Elechi was among the perpetrators who launched a brazen attack on the community, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals.Recounting the events, Iringe-Koko revealed, “On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the Dey-Gbam cult group once again descended upon the community. However, in a fierce shootout that ensued between the cultists and the combined forces of the police and local vigilantes, Azunda Elechi sustained fatal injuries.”Law enforcement authorities successfully recovered one pump-action shotgun, along with two live cartridges and three empty shells, serving as evidence of the intense exchange of gunfire.In light of this development, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nwonyi Polycarp, issued an earnest appeal to parents and guardians. He stressed the crucial need for close monitoring of their children and wards, cautioning against the influence of societal pressures that may lead them astray into criminal activities.Additionally, members of the public were urged to uphold law and order while remaining vigilant in their neighborhoods.
