National Population Commission (NPC) clarifies reasons for sudden postponement of census

The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census due to the government’s transition program and the post-election mood in the country. In a press conference held in Abuja on Sunday, Dr Inuwa Jalingo, the 2023 Census Manager and Director of the NPC, expressed the commission’s preparedness for the census and highlighted the ground-breaking preparations made for the first-ever digital census in Nigeria.Jalingo stated that the commission had achieved international standards for a digital census and had procured and distributed 450,000 digital gadgets to all local governments. However, he acknowledged that government was a continuous process and expressed hope that the incoming administration would build on the successes recorded for the eventual conduct of the census.Jalingo lauded the support of the Buhari-led administration and noted that the commission had successfully trained about 60,000 facilitators across the country. He emphasized the importance of the census for national economic planning and administrative planning, and reiterated that the commission had mobilized Nigerians for the census and provided every necessary information for its success. The NPC had initially scheduled the Population and Housing Census from May 3 to May 7, but it has been postponed indefinitely.
