The Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelmannan, has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack on a Turkish evacuation plane by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebel group. In a statement released in Abuja, the ambassador expressed his dismay at the attempt to obstruct the evacuation of diplomats and foreign nationals, calling it a flagrant violation of the truce. The RSF fired heavily at the Turkish plane as it was landing at the Wadi Sayidna Military Airport on Friday, 28th April 2023, damaging its fuel system and injuring a crew member. Despite this, the plane was able to land safely, and repairs are underway. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan has urged the international community to condemn the RSF’s criminal act of violating the truce and obstructing the evacuation efforts.The RSF attacks are part of a larger conflict that broke out on 15th April 2023 in Sudan, mainly in Khartoum and the Darfur region, between rival factions of the country’s military government. RSF leader Mohamed Dagalo and Sudan’s de facto leader Abdel Al-Burhan both claimed to be in control of key government sites, including the general military headquarters, the presidential palace, Khartoum International Airport, the Army chief’s official residence, and the Sudan TV headquarters. The conflict has resulted in airstrikes, heavy gunfire, and artillery across the country.
