In a recent development, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has taken a significant step in the case involving an Abuja man who stands accused of committing homicide. The charges stem from an incident in which the suspect allegedly killed a man who attempted to open his vehicle, mistaking it for that of his employer.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the police, it was revealed that both the suspect and the deceased, Benjamin, were linked to individuals with strikingly similar Toyota Camry vehicles in terms of model and color. These vehicles happened to be parked in close proximity to each other, further complicating the situation.

During a press briefing held on Tuesday, FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, shed light on the unfolding events. He recounted the incident, stating that on September 23, 2023, at approximately 9:15 pm, Mohammed Rabiu reported to the Karmo Division that around 9:05 pm on the same day, he had dispatched his employee, Benjamin, to retrieve a phone charger from his car. Tragically, this errand led to a fatal encounter when a man named Shaibu Ibrahim allegedly attacked Benjamin, inflicting multiple stab wounds.

Swift response from the police saw officers from the Karmo Division rushing to the scene. They promptly transported the victim to a hospital, where, regrettably, he was declared deceased. The suspect was apprehended, and the jack knife believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was recovered from his possession.

The initial findings of the investigation suggest a deeply unfortunate case of mistaken identity. Benjamin, while attempting to access the vehicle, wrongly identified the suspect’s car as belonging to the individual who had sent him on the errand, failing to realize the similarity between the vehicles. This misunderstanding escalated rapidly, resulting in a tragic loss of life as the suspect reacted with violence without seeking clarification.
