Police Retrieve Hijacked Vehicle Linked to Gruesome Death of Truck Driver In Lagos state
In a concerning incident that unfolded in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State on Tuesday, a container truck was seized by unidentified individuals claiming to be part of a taskforce. This event was marred by a tragic turn of events as the officials reportedly killed the truck’s driver, known only as Toheeb, during a midnight patrol, as previously reported by PUNCH Metro.
Toheeb, aged 30, had recently left Tincan Island when these officials, traveling in a branded white Hilux van, intercepted him near the Mile 2 bridge. Their attempt to forcibly take control of the truck prompted Toheeb to make a daring escape by jumping out of the vehicle.
Infuriated by his escape, one of the officials allegedly fired a fatal shot into Toheeb’s back, while his motor boy suffered brutal physical assault using the butt of a rifle. Failing to commandeer Toheeb’s truck due to engine troubles, the officials resorted to hijacking another truck, expelling its driver in the process.
The tragic death of Toheeb sparked a protest, which was later dispersed by law enforcement. Notably, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, denied any involvement of the agency in this incident.
In a subsequent turn of events, a member of the Lagos Maritime Truck Owners revealed that the missing truck was located at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yard in Oshodi on Tuesday afternoon. Following a frantic search by concerned individuals, the police were alerted.
A police source confirmed that the truck had been transported to the state police command, where investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and identify those responsible.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The situation remains fluid, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation unfolds.
