Tragedy Strikes: Spark from Phone Ignites Devastating Petrol Tanker Explosion, Claiming 20 Lives in Ondo State
In a devastating incident that occurred on Sunday evening, a petrol tanker explosion in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo state has left at least 20 people dead. The heartbreaking incident is believed to have been triggered by a spark from a mobile phone held by one of the individuals attempting to scoop fuel that had spilled from the tanker.Among the deceased were three young children and a pregnant woman, who had reportedly come with N100,000 to purchase fuel. Eyewitnesses, including a man named Cyriacus, recounted the horrifying events, stating that they were inside a church when the tanker toppled and released its flammable contents onto the road.Despite being warned by their clergy about the dangers involved, some individuals rushed to scoop the fuel, unaware of the impending disaster. The spark from a phone ignited the fuel, leading to the rapid spread of the fire, and the tragic loss of lives.Cyriacus shared his account of the tragic incident, saying, “We were inside the church when we heard that the tanker fell. The rain was also falling. People were taking fuel when the fire started after a spark from a phone. Three children died, and we have counted over 15 bodies. A pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died. The money is still with her.”As of now, official details from authorities are yet to be released. Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Ondo Police spokesperson, has not provided any updates on the incident at the time of filing this report.The unfortunate event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with unsafe handling of flammable materials and highlights the need for vigilance and safety precautions in such situations.
