Deadly Brews: Ogun State on High Alert as Killer Alcoholic Drinks Claim Over 10 Lives

In a somber revelation, the Ogun State Government announced on Sunday that eight people have lost their lives, while 11 others are in critical condition, allegedly due to the consumption of killer alcoholic beverages in various parts of the state. The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and risks associated with consuming locally brewed alcoholic drinks and other products not authorized by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).Dr. Tomi Coker, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, delivered the distressing news through an official statement. She disclosed that there were 11 reported cases of severe illnesses and eight deaths directly linked to the consumption of locally brewed alcoholic products. The incidents were reported to have taken place between July 18 and 20, 2023, in the Ijebu-North East and Odogbolu Local Government Areas of Ogun State. In response to the alarming situation, the state government has taken swift action to raise awareness and sensitize the public about the dangers associated with consuming unapproved alcoholic drinks and other products. Dr. Coker stressed the importance of only consuming products that have been officially approved and certified by NAFDAC.The Ministry of Health has already launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the source and nature of the hazardous products. Meanwhile, the public has been strongly urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid consuming drinks from unverified sources while the investigation is ongoing.Dr. Coker emphasized that the unauthorized production and distribution of alcoholic beverages and consumable items pose significant health risks, as they are often manufactured in unregulated and unhygienic conditions, potentially becoming breeding grounds for harmful substances and toxins. The recent incidents in Ijebu-North East and Odogbolu LGAs have demonstrated the severe health complications and fatal outcomes that can arise from consuming such substances. To combat the sale and consumption of harmful products, the government is calling for collaborative efforts among regulatory bodies and the public. Dr. Coker urged citizens to promptly report any suspicious locally brewed alcoholic drink to the relevant authorities or NAFDAC. Additionally, any cases of illness or death following the consumption of similar products, including herbal concoctions, should be reported to the nearest government hospital. The Ogun State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its residents. The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the vital role that vigilance and cooperation play in safeguarding public health from potentially dangerous products.
