Kaduna Court Sentences Man to Caning for Chicken Theft; To Receive 8 Strokes
In a recent ruling, the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the punishment of Adamu Isah with eight strokes of the cane after finding him guilty of stealing 10 live chickens. Presiding over the case, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel issued a stern warning to the offender, urging him to abstain from further criminal activities and embrace a life of good conduct.Isah, who pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass and theft, implored the court for leniency, vowing to mend his ways and uphold proper behavior going forward. The accused faced a three-count indictment, encompassing criminal conspiracy, trespass, and theft.During the proceedings, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, informed the court that the incident was reported by Sani Rabiu at the Gabasawa Police Station on May 13. According to Leo, Isah had collaborated with two unidentified individuals to execute the crime, pilfering the poultry farm located in Kawo and absconding with the 10 live chickens. The defendant’s attempted escape with the stolen fowls concealed in a bag was thwarted, resulting in his arrest, while his accomplices managed to elude capture.Citing the relevant provisions of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017, the prosecutor emphasized that Isah’s actions violated sections 308, 233, and 217 of the code. The court took these offenses seriously and deemed the punishment of eight strokes of the cane as fitting retribution for the crime committed. The ruling serves as a reminder that law enforcement authorities and the judiciary in Kaduna State remain vigilant in their commitment to maintaining law and order. The court’s decision also underscores the significance of personal responsibility and the consequences that follow acts of criminality.
