Edo State Government Unveils Ambitious Plan to Overhaul Schools with N6bn Fund
The Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, announced that his administration has allocated N6 billion to rebuild secondary schools in the state between May 2023 and September 2024. During the 2023 Edo Education Week, Governor Obaseki revealed his desire to leave a clear plan and direction for the state’s education system. The governor acknowledged that it was impossible to solve the state’s educational problems that had been accumulating for several generations within a five to eight-year term. The financing plan for rebuilding secondary schools had begun, and the governor hoped that the government would be held accountable by citizens to deliver on its promises. Obaseki explained that unlike basic and junior schools, there was no federal support for secondary schools, and the state had to come up with a mechanism to rebuild them. He added that it was unrealistic to expect that all schools could be rebuilt and furnished, and his administration had hired teachers to measure what the children have learned.
